Slow clients during backup of File Server

My backup server (G3/266, OS 9.2.2, 100mb Asante Card, 384MB RAM) and my
file server (OS 9.1, ASIP 6.3.3, G3/300 tower) are connected a Baystack
10/100 Switch.  Occasionally while backing up of my file server, some of my
clients, including an iBook hanging off a hub that is connected to the
switch that my file and backup servers are on and a Compaq iPaq hanging off
a different 10mb hub that is connected to the switch expierence extreme
slowness.  Neither of them have shares mounted to the File server, but basic
tasks like navigating the desktop is just so chuggy...  this happens until I
stop the backup and everything seems fine again. Any ideas
